City University gets rid of part-time option for its MA in legal translation

City University has decided to stop offering its MA in legal translation as a part-time course. This decision came at very short notice, only a week or so ago, and has caught everyone by surprise, especially those already accepted on the course for this year’s intake in September, who now will have to do it full-time or look elsewhere.

This change effectively takes away one of the qualities that made the MA attractive: it gave translators working full-time the chance to do a course of this type with traditional face-to-face classes by distance and part-time. It’s just not feasible for some of us to do a master’s full-time.

There are, of course, other master’s in translation out there, but few offer the same depth of specialisation in legal translation and even fewer (if any!) offer their classes in intensive blocks for the out-of-towners. It’s a shame that this unique course has just pushed itself out of the reach of some potential students.

  1. Hi Rob,

Remember me, I met you while doing a CPD at the university. I saw this on the website a few days ago. That’s a real shame about the part-time master, because it was so compatible with the lives of working translators. I think that was one of the course’s main advantages.

    • Hi Tara! How’s it going? All well, I hope.

It is a shame, but you never know. The course is actually getting reviewed soon, so they might decide to bring back the part-time option.

Anyway, nice to hear from you. Rob
